The authors

 

Ana Doménech Gómez

Graduated and PhD in Veterinary Medicine by the UCM. Her teaching duties are related
to immunology and infectious diseases, preventive medicine, healthcare policy and zoonoses,
and public health at both the Graduate¡¯s and Master¡¯s levels. She is member of the
Clinical Microbiology and Parasitology Service of the Complutense Veterinary Teaching
Hospital in Madrid. She is the coordinator of the specialty in virology of the official Master¡¯s
courses of Virology. In addition, she is member of the Management Board of the
Spanish Virology Society, member of the European Society for Virology, and two associations
of veterinary experts in laboratory diagnosis (EAVLD, AVEDILA). She has participated
in several books about immunology and infectious diseases in veterinary medicine,
and various projects of educational innovation at the UCM. Her main research interests
are centered in animal retroviruses, especially in ruminants and felines. She is author of
numerous scientific publications in national and specialized journals, as well as collaborator
in books, monographs, scientific papers and peer-reviews about retrovirus.

 

María del Mar Blanco Gutiérrez

Graduated and PhD in Veterinary Medicine by the UCM. Over her whole career she has
centered her teaching and research activity in microbiology and immunology. As a professor,
she teaches courses in Veterinary Degree, Master¡¯s Degrees, as well as specialized
training, and has also performed stays through the Erasmus programme for
professors in Italy, Portugal, France and Belgium. She has participated in the writing
and translation of several books about immunology and infectious diseases in veterinary
medicine, as well as the design and development of educational materials framed in
teaching innovation projects. She is author of numerous scientific publications in international
specialized journals, as well as review and disclosure articles. She has performed
some research stays in Europe and the United States, focusing her activity in different
aspects of the pathogen-host interaction.

 

María Dolores Cid Vázquez

Graduated and PhD in Veterinary Medicine by the UCM. She teaches at the subject areas
of epidemiology, infectious diseases, preventive medicine, healthcare policy, zoonoses
and public health at the Veterinary degree and postgraduate degree. She has managed
various projects on teaching innovation in epidemiology and infectious diseases, developing
teaching materials including printed and electronic books, interactive games and
artistic-scientific exhibits. She has directed several competitive research projects, agreements
with companies and international development cooperation projects. She has
published numerous articles in scientific journals, monographs, book chapters and disclosure
articles. Her main research line is about infectious diseases of ruminants in the
newborn stage, especially diarrhoea and respiratory processes.

 

María Teresa Cutuli de Simón

Graduated and PhD in Veterinary Medicine by the UCM. She teaches the subjects of
microbiology and immunology and rotation at the Veterinary Medicine Degree. She coordinates
the subject on virus at the official Master¡¯s courses of Virology, and she is member
of the Clinical Microbiology and Parasitology Service of the Complutense Veterinary
Teaching Hospital in Madrid. She is actively involved in projects of educational innovation
at the UCM such as ¡°Virtual laboratory of veterinary microbiology¡±, ¡°Immunotrivial: basic¡±
and ¡°Immunotrivial: advanced¡±, ¡°Viropolis¡± and ¡°Epidemics vir(tu)al¡±. She is co-author of
several books: ¡°Handbook of veterinary microbiology¡±, ¡°Handbook of clinic mycology¡±,
¡°Practical guide for identification and diagnosis in clinical mycology¡± and ¡°Textbook of
virology¡±. Furthermore, she is author of numerous scientific publications related to her
area of knowledge. She develops her research in mites and arthropods control, and the
study of the pathogen-host interaction.

 

Alberto A. Díez Guerrier

Veterinary surgeon and associate professor specialized in ruminants at the Animal
Health Department. He teaches the subjects of infectious diseases, parasitic diseases,
preventive medicine, healthcare policy, zoonoses and public health, and the clinical rotations
at the Veterinary degree. He is a field practitioner, responsible for the veterinary
services of the ruminant Health Defence Groups (ADS), founding partner and spokesman
at the Ruminant Veterinary Specialists Association of Madrid, member of the training
committee of the Veterinary Professional Association of Madrid, veterinary collaborator
at the regional government of Madrid, and technical advisor in diagnostic tests of
bovine tuberculosis. He has participated in European, national and company agreement
research projects, teaching and international development cooperation projects. Furthermore,
he has published several articles in international research journals, monographs,
reviews and book chapters.

 

Gustavo Domínguez Bernal

Graduated and PhD in Veterinary Medicine by the UCM. He currently teaches disciplines
related with immunology and infectious diseases both in Veterinary Medicine Degree and
Master¡¯s Degree. He actively participates in the promotion of science in society, collaborating
in initiatives like the Week of Science or developing new teaching methods in IT
support framed into projects of educational innovation. He is author of many scientific
publications in international journals and several reviews about the interaction between
pathogens and host cells. He has completed some research stays in different European
countries. He currently focuses his research activity in the design of new vaccination
strategies to fight the porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome, bacteria (Salmonella
spp.) and protozoa (Leishmania spp.), which affect various animal species.

 

Alicia Gibello Prieto

Graduated in Biological Sciences at the UCM. She completed her PhD at the Veterinary
School of the same university. Her teaching activity has been centered on subjects related
to microbiology and immunology at the Veterinary Degree, and Master¡¯s courses and
seminars of specialized training. She has participated in the writing and translation of
some books about veterinary immunology, as well as in designing and developing teaching
materials framed into educational innovation projects in microbiology and immunology.
Her research activity has been focused on the application of microorganisms
in bio-remediation processes, and the pathogen-host relationship in diseases affecting
aquaculture, mainly by studying new diagnostic systems, virulence mechanisms and/or
pathogenicity, and the host¡¯s immune response. She is author of many scientific publications
in international and national specialized journals, as well as disclosure articles. She
has completed her scientific training through research stays at many institutions in the
United Kingdom at Leicester University and the Institute of Food Research of Reading.

 

Esperanza Gómez-Lucía Duato

Lecturer in Animal Health, she has been professor of microbiology and immunology at
the Veterinary School of the UCM since she began her teaching career 30 years ago.
She is member of the managing boards of the Spanish Virology Society (SEV), the History
of Virology Group (GHV), and the Group of Teaching and Promotion of Microbiology
(D+D+SEM). She is also member of the European Society for Virology. She has consolidated
her research training in prolonged stays at universities in the United States
like Madison (Wisconsin), Harvard (Massachusetts), Oregon Health Sciences University
(Oregon), and Davis (California), and also performed an Erasmus stay for professors
in Munich. She is coauthor of the computer programmes and games ¡°Virtual laboratory
of veterinary microbiology¡±, ¡°Viropolis¡±, ¡°Immunotrivial: basic¡± and ¡°Immunotrivial:
advanced¡± and ¡°Epidemics vir(tu)al¡±. Furthermore, she is coordinator of the ¡°Handbook
of veterinary immunology¡± and, thanks to an Erasmus+ project, of the ¡°Textbook
of virology¡±. She develops her research activity about animal retroviruses, particularly in
bovines, small ruminants, and felines.
